Uganda’s parliamentary athletics team, coached by former world champion Dorcus Inzikuru, showcased exceptional performances at the Inter-Parliamentary Games in Kigali, Rwanda. The team, fueled by a desire to defend their championship, clinched victories in various track events.
Joan Alobo and Helen Auma secured first positions in separate 100m heats, while Robert Ssekitoleeko and Bernard Odoi triumphed in respective 400m heats. In the 1500m races, Julius Acon, the defending champion, secured victory for Uganda in the men’s contest, while Christine Akello finished second in the women’s race due to joint cramps in the final lap.
Uganda’s dominance extended to the 4x100m relays, where both the men’s and women’s teams secured victories. Coach Inzikuru praised the support from Parliament leadership and expressed confidence in winning more medals in the upcoming games on December 16, 2023.
In soccer, Uganda’s football team, captained by Moses Magogo, defeated the hosts, Rwanda, with an impressive 12-0 scoreline. Karim Masaba scored a hat trick, and Muhammed Nsereko contributed with a brace.
Looking ahead, the golf team, led by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, is gearing up for their first campaign at the Kigali Golf Club. Tayebwa acknowledged the challenge posed by the Kenyan team but expressed confidence in Uganda’s preparedness and team spirit.
The sporting action will continue, with matches in basketball and volleyball against Tanzania and Rwanda, respectively. The women’s volleyball team will face South Sudan, adding to the exciting lineup of competitive events in the Inter-Parliamentary Games.
