MTN's Pledge: One Million Ugandan-Made Smartphones on the Horizon

MTN Uganda has announced its commitment to support the local smartphone assembly and manufacturing industry by purchasing one million handsets. Smartphone usage in Uganda currently stands at under 40%, and the telecom company’s initiative aims to lower handset costs and enhance overall smartphone adoption.

During his speech at the second Uganda – South Africa Trade and Investment summit held in Munyonyo on September 6th, Mcebisi Hubert Jonas, the Chairman of MTN Group, expressed the company’s dedication to bolstering a local smartphone assembly factory. He stated, “In the near future, we will procure a million handsets from that factory to ensure its sustainability and success.” Mr. Jonas further commented, “Without a doubt, we can declare this conference a resounding success.”




Mr. Jonas also acknowledged the institutional quality in Uganda, stating, “I think that there is a great appreciation of the institutional quality in Uganda.” He emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to improve institutional quality and reduce the cost of doing business in the country.
