On Wednesday, December 20, 2023, the Deputy RDC of Gulu district, Mr. Cosmas James Okidi, expressed his support for the community’s vision to construct a community school.
According to the District Councillor for Patiko Sub County, Akwii village, Pawel Parish in Patiko Sub County, there are approximately 200 households with 600 children under 10 years old. These children currently have to travel 6 km to Kiju Government Primary School and 7-8 km to Pawel Angany Primary School, creating the need for a local school to ensure quality education for the pupils.
The community has generously donated 10 acres of land for the school and is reaching out to well-wishers, individuals, and the government to contribute to the development of the school. As they seek support, the community has already initiated the process of making 15,000 bricks for construction.
In his address to the developers, DRDC Cosmas commended their initiative, aligning it with the constitution of the Republic of Uganda and the Local Government Act Cap 243, emphasizing the roles and responsibilities of communities in developing their localities, such as opening access roads and addressing infrastructure issues.
Highlighting the government’s policy that each parish should have a government primary school within a four-kilometer radius, Cosmas urged the community to begin the process of acquiring the school from the sub-county. This involves expressing their interest in the annual workplan/budget, seeking blessings from the district council, and submitting proposals to the Ministry of Education and Sports.
Cosmas emphasized the President’s commitment to education, evident in the establishment of numerous primary schools, secondary schools, vocational skills training centers, and Presidential Industrial Hubs across the region.
Furthermore, Deputy RDC Gulu, Mr. Cosmas James Okidi, urged the community to embrace various government programs such as PDM, Emyooga, OWC, UWEB, Youth Livelihood, Sage, disability grants, and the Five Sectors Economy for social and economic transformation.
