The political landscape in Bududa is undergoing significant shifts as residents express dissatisfaction with the potential appointment of Hon Joel Ssenyonyi, Nakawa West MP, as the Leader of Opposition in Parliament. Bududa residents are adamant that the honor should go to Hon John Baptist Nambeshe, who has garnered immense support in the region.

Bududa’s Ultimatum

Local reports suggest that the people of Bududa are considering severing political ties with the National Unity Platform (NUP) if Hon Nambeshe is not appointed as the Leader of Opposition. This sentiment has gained momentum on social media, with residents expressing their strong preference for Nambeshe.

Concerns over Bobi Wine’s Image

The report indicates that Bobi Wine, previously dubbed “Mubuya” during his visit to Bududa, is at risk of losing that title due to recent behavior that has not resonated well with the people. Hajji Mansa Musa, a prominent politician from Bududa, calls for the immediate withdrawal of the name “Mubuya” in response to Bobi Wine’s actions.

Impact of Mpuuga’s Appointment

The shift in allegiance began when Hon Mathias Mpuuga was preferred as the Leader of Opposition, causing some Bududa residents to distance themselves from NUP. Recent statements by Bobi Wine on BBC radio, particularly regarding homosexuality, have further deepened the divide, especially among the church and culturalists in Bududa.

Who is John Baptist Nambeshe

Hon Nambeshe, approximately 59 years old, has a political background rooted in staunch support for the National Resistance Movement (NRM). He ascended from mayor of Bududa town council to chairman of the LCV Bududa District. His tactics, such as eating nails, endeared him to voters, leading to his victory over long-time mentor Hon Wakikona in the 2016 parliamentary elections.

Political Strength and Potential Loyalty Shift

Nambeshe, an assistant physician and born-again Christian, remains a potent political force in Bududa. The failure to appoint him to a significant position in NUP raises concerns about a potential shift towards NRM, as he maintains strong political support. Nambeshe’s ability to win elections with comparatively lower campaign costs sets him apart from other contenders.

Bududa’s Perception of Nambeshe

While Nambeshe may still be perceived as an NRM figure by some, his popularity in Bududa remains strong. During the 2021 elections, over 60% of votes in Manjiya came from his NRM voters. Nambeshe has strategically avoided radicalizing Bududa with NUP, maintaining a cautious political approach.

The dynamics in Bududa highlight the delicate balance between political affiliations and regional loyalty. The potential rift with NUP, fueled by dissatisfaction over leadership choices, underscores the intricate nature of politics in the region.
