Bishop Advises Against Using Biblical Verses to Support Polygamy

The North Kigezi Diocesan Bishop, Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe, has urged married couples to avoid using Biblical verses from the Old Testament, highlighting polygamous marriages of kings, to justify the practice. He pointed out that even these kings regretted having multiple wives.

During a wedding ceremony at All Saints Nyakariro Church of Uganda, Bishop Asiimwe emphasized the importance of preserving love within families. He encouraged couples to guide their children towards healthy family relationships, safeguarding the institution of marriage, which is threatened by breakups and a lack of mutual respect.

According to Bishop Asiimwe, having more than one wife with different children diminishes respect within a family, regardless of the support provided for their well-being. He urged couples to learn from the experiences of those who had multiple wives compared to those with a single spouse.

While acknowledging the polygamous marriages of kings like David and Solomon in the Old Testament, Bishop Asiimwe highlighted that even King David, in his proverbs, expressed regret, considering it all as vanity. Solomon, who had 1000 wives, noted it was wasteful, emphasizing the vanity of marrying two or three.

The Bishop’s message also extended to relatives of married couples, urging them to refrain from intervening in marriages. Additionally, he advised married individuals to avoid listening to third parties if they aim for successful unions.

The wedding where Bishop Asiimwe delivered this message took place on December 29, at All Saints Nyakariro Church of Uganda in Bugangari Archdeaconry, North Kigezi Diocese, Rukungiri District. The groom, Dr. Hannington Mwesigwa, is the son of Can. Florence Rwabahima, a member of the diocesan synod of North Kigezi Diocese and the former Kanungu District Health Officer.
