The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) unveiled a new tool in a bid to enhance understanding and compliance with taxation laws among the Chinese business community at a launch event held at Silver Springs Hotel in Bugolobi, Kampala. The event marked the introduction of a taxation handbook translated into Chinese and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between URA and SinoCham.

Addressing the gathering, URA Commissioner General John Musinguzi expressed gratitude to the Chinese ambassador in Uganda, acknowledging China’s substantial support in foreign direct investment (FDI) and trade within Uganda. Musinguzi emphasized China’s vital role in Uganda’s economic landscape and highlighted URA’s commitment to simplifying tax laws to help taxpayers better comprehend their obligations.

Musinguzi stated, “Non-compliance often stems from a lack of understanding, and we aim to address this by translating tax materials into languages understood by taxpayers, including our web portal.” He encouraged the Chinese community to engage with URA, assuring them of the authority’s strong stance against corruption within its ranks.

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Lizhong hailed the launch of the handbook as a testament to the robust partnership between China and Uganda. Lizhong noted the flourishing bilateral trade and investments and expressed the embassy’s eagerness to explore further opportunities.

Chairperson of SinoCham, Li Jincheng, commended the collaborative efforts between URA and the China Chamber of Commerce in producing the handbook. The handbook, according to a post on X (formerly Twitter) on January 5, 2024, serves as an essential guide for the Chinese community, aiding in understanding and fulfilling their tax obligations, crucial for the nation’s economic growth and stability.
