The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance in Uganda has successfully completed the installation of high-speed internet connectivity at key locations for an enhanced user experience in anticipation of the upcoming Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Group of 77 + China summits.
Speaking at the weekly media briefing, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, disclosed that the centers have been equipped with Wifi-6, the latest and most advanced Wifi technology designed to optimize network device performance in dense conditions.
“We have finished upgrading the internet services at Entebbe International Airport and [Speke Resort] Munyonyo to Wifi-6. We have also established an internet hotspot at the Kajjansi junctions, Entebbe Expressway toll gate, and Hotel Africana, which will serve as a major media center,” stated Dr. Baryomunsi.
He emphasized the crucial role of the internet in facilitating communication during the NAM summit, highlighting its significance in ensuring the smooth flow of information. The minister also assured that the high-speed internet services would continue to be available for Ugandans after the conclusion of the two summits.
In addition to the internet upgrades, the Ministry has supported the creation of two dedicated websites for the NAM and G77 summits, reinforcing them with robust web firewall applications for enhanced content security.
The ICT ministry announced the official opening of the new conference center at Munyonyo today, marking a milestone in Uganda’s technological infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the UN Women, in collaboration with the Ugandan government, has organized an exhibition at Serena Hotel Kigo named “Source of the Nile Women in Agribusiness Expo/Summit.” The exhibition, hosting 40 women showcasing various crops grown in Uganda, aims to provide a platform for international delegates during the NAM summit.
Ms. Paulina Chiwangu, the UN Women Resident Representative in Uganda, emphasized the exhibition’s significance as a launchpad for future NAM women investment summits. She highlighted the importance of partnerships to foster investments in value addition and agro-processing activities, citing the substantial contribution of women in Uganda’s agricultural sector.
Dr. Baryomunsi urged politicians and the public to unite and collaborate for the collective good of the country, emphasizing that the conferences transcend political affiliations, with Uganda being recognized as a hospitable nation.
