Rwandan border patrol stops armed Congolese soldiers, one killed

The Ankole Times

Early Tuesday morning, January 16th, a tense encounter unfolded on the Rwandan border. Three armed soldiers from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) crossed into Rwandan territory near the village of Isangano. The Rwandan Defence Force (RDF) swiftly responded, supported by local neighborhood watch.

Two of the Congolese soldiers, Sergeant Asman Mupenda Termite and Corporal Anyasaka Nkoi Lucien, were apprehended. They were found in possession of an AK-47 rifle, ammunition magazines, a protective vest, and cannabis.

The third soldier, however, did not surrender. He opened fire on the patrols, prompting a return of fire. Tragically, the soldier was killed in the exchange. Fortunately, no Rwandan personnel were injured.

The RDF is currently conducting further investigations into the incident. This event adds to the already complex and sensitive relationship between Rwanda and the DR Congo.
