A 34-year-old man from Kanyanzira Village, Nyanga Parish, Rubaare Sub-county, Ntungamo District, has been apprehended by police for allegedly murdering his elder brother’s nine-year-old child. The gruesome act involved chopping the victim into pieces, placing the body parts in a saucepan, and instructing his wife to cook the human remains.

The disturbing event occurred last Sunday when the suspect, left alone with the child while his wife and their child attended church, decided to carry out the heinous crime. Upon the wife’s return, the suspect claimed to have bought meat and asked her to cook it immediately, revealing later that the meat in question was, in fact, parts of the nephew’s body.

The wife, horrified by the revelation, raised an alarm, prompting other residents to intervene. The dismembered body was identified as that of the suspect’s nine-year-old nephew, the son of his elder brother. The community handed the suspect over to the police.

According to Mr. John Kabeho, the district councillor for Rubaare Sub-county, the suspect had a history of mental health issues dating back to 2020. Despite previous hospitalizations and prayers at churches to address his mental challenges, the suspect’s condition persisted.

The Rubaare Sub-county female councillor, Ms. Shallon Tweheyo Kyomukama, expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the need for increased attention to mental health issues by the government. Ms. Edidah Kosa, the Rubaare Sub-county chief, played a crucial role in assisting residents and police in delivering both the suspect and the victim’s remains to Omungyenyi Police Post.

The Ntungamo District police commander, Mr. Hannington Bushaija, confirmed the incident and assured ongoing investigations. Ms. Lillian Ahimbisibwe, wife of the South Ankole Diocese Bishop and a seasoned counselor, highlighted the escalating challenge of mental health, particularly among the youth.
