A 70-year-old mzee in the district of Obongi has generously offered free land for a 3 billion shillings water project in Obongi district. Mzee Mario Echonga, a resident of Drabijo village in Drabijo parish, Aliba sub-county in Obongi district, has donated land for the Ewafa Aliba water scheme under DRDIP in Obongi district.
The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Obongi, Mr. Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, District Internal Security Officer (DISO) Elyebu Denis, and Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) engineering assistant Esaku Emmanuel held a meeting with Mzee Echonga to express gratitude for his land donation. They also appealed to other landowners to follow his example.
Mzee Echonga conveyed to the team that he gave the land in appreciation of the NRM government’s decision to provide clean water for the first time to Aliba and Ewafa sub-counties.
The managing director of Tashil Uganda Ltd, Mr. Denis Matsiko, stated that the land offered by Mzee Echonga is now being utilized as a water source, generating over 15,000 liters of water per hour. The water is connected to 20 public standpipes, each with 2 taps, and includes a reservoir tank with a capacity of 160,000 liters.
