Local leaders and residents of Lyolwa Town Council in Tororo District have expressed worry about the condition of Akipenet Primary School, the only government-aided facility in the area. Commissioned in 2019 with an enrollment of 300 pupils, the school is among the 38 community primary schools in the district absorbed by the government. Despite this, it lacks permanent classroom blocks, leading to students studying under trees and some dropping out due to inadequate facilities.
Mr. Joel Olowo, representing Pabone Ward, expresses disappointment, expecting infrastructure improvements when the government took over. He urges swift action from the government to address the situation. Similarly, Ms. Regina Nancha mentions attempts to construct classrooms, but lack of funds halted progress.
Mr. Nicholas Onyango, the area LCIII chairperson, emphasizes the urgency of replacing dilapidated structures to prevent potential accidents. Mr. Obeyo Donato, the school management committee chairperson, highlights community efforts, including land donations, but notes financial constraints hindering construction.
Mr. Yona Odoi, the head teacher, points out high enrollment and the challenges of turning away students due to limited classrooms. He stresses safety concerns during adverse weather, forcing closures due to unsafe conditions.
Mr. Denis Francis Tabu, the district inspector of schools, acknowledges support efforts, including staffing, but cites budget constraints delaying classroom construction until the next financial year. He urges understanding of budgetary limitations, emphasizing the need for patience in addressing the school’s challenges.
