SOS Children’s Villages, local leaders, and the Uganda Police Force have partnered to combat gender-based violence (GBV) through the implementation of the ‘Grow Equal – Her Right to a Sustainable Life’ project. Launched at the K Hotel in Entebbe, this initiative marks a pivotal step towards fostering communities that uphold equal rights, opportunities, and access to resources for all individuals.

Led by Mr. Hosana Woldesemayat, the National Director of SOS Children’s Villages Uganda, the project seeks to address gender inequality and promote child protection across Wakiso, Kabarole, and Kamwenge districts. With a duration of four years, the project aims to directly benefit over 10,500 individuals, including girls and boys, young women and men, and adults, with a particular focus on those with disabilities.

Mr. Woldesemayat emphasized the importance of women’s empowerment in achieving sustainable development and peace, underscoring the critical role of community engagement in fostering gender equality. Through partnerships with religious, cultural, and opinion leaders, SOS Children’s Villages intends to tackle gender-based violence and discrimination while advocating for equal access to social protection services.

Mr. Hakim Bbosa, the National Program Coordinator for SOS Children’s Villages, reiterated the project’s overarching goal of transforming communities into spaces that champion equal rights and opportunities for all individuals. This comprehensive approach encompasses various aspects of social protection and community development, with the ultimate aim of fostering inclusivity and equality.

Dr. Katja Yvonne Kerschbaumer, Head of the Austrian Embassy Development Cooperation Office in Uganda, highlighted Austria’s longstanding partnership with SOS Children’s Villages and emphasized the importance of synergy in achieving shared objectives. By aligning their efforts with the needs and priorities of Ugandan society, the partnership aims to maximize impact and effectiveness.

In his remarks, Mr. Ronald Kalema, the Mayor of Katabi Town Council, commended the initiative and urged unity and dedication among the implementing team. Recognizing the role of men in perpetuating societal issues, he called for a shift in attitudes and behaviors to promote gender equality and eliminate violence against women and girls.

Representing the Uganda Police Force, Ms. Night Dina, Officer in Charge of the Child and Family Protection Unit at Kajjansi Division Police, reiterated the force’s commitment to combating gender-based violence and ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals, especially vulnerable groups.

Through this collaborative endeavor, stakeholders are poised to make meaningful strides in addressing gender-based violence and fostering inclusive, equitable communities in Uganda.
