As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, Muslim scholars emphasize the importance of spiritual reflection and restraint, urging followers to limit their use of social media platforms during this sacred period. Speaking at the Iftari dinner organized by MTN Uganda in Kampala on March 13, Hamid Byamugenzi stressed the need for Muslims to prioritize reciting the Quran over indulging in social media activities, which may inadvertently contradict Islamic teachings.
Byamugenzi cautioned against the consumption of inappropriate content on social media platforms, emphasizing the potential for such material to detract from the spiritual focus of Ramadan. He encouraged Muslims to dedicate their time to reciting the Quran, highlighting the spiritual rewards and blessings associated with engaging with the holy book during this auspicious month.
Highlighting the significance of Quranic recitation, Byamugenzi underscored its role in seeking Allah’s satisfaction and seeking forgiveness for sins. Quoting Prophet Muhammad, he emphasized the Quran’s intercession on behalf of believers on the Day of Judgment, stressing the importance of utilizing Ramadan as an opportunity for spiritual growth and reflection.
Sarah Bateta, Chief Financial Officer of Mobile Money at MTN Uganda, reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting the Muslim community, particularly in facilitating pilgrimage experiences. She announced initiatives aimed at providing convenience and affordability for Muslims undertaking Umrah and Hajj journeys, including sponsorship opportunities for select pilgrims.
Zakariya Kyewalyanga, Executive Director of Uganda Bureau of Hajji Affairs, advised prospective Hajj pilgrims to adhere to Saudi Arabia’s new guidelines, particularly regarding financial transactions. He emphasized the importance of clearing financial obligations promptly and encouraged the use of mobile money transfer systems to facilitate seamless transactions while in Saudi Arabia.
Kyewalyanga also urged pilgrims to exercise caution when carrying cash, citing the challenges posed by large sums during the clearance process. He advised against carrying cash exceeding a specified limit to streamline clearance procedures and ensure a smoother pilgrimage experience.
As Muslims worldwide prepare to observe Ramadan, scholars and community leaders emphasize the significance of spiritual devotion, charitable acts, and self-discipline during this holiest of months. By prioritizing spiritual pursuits over worldly distractions, believers seek to deepen their connection with Allah and enhance their spiritual journey during Ramadan.
