Last week, an attempted robbery took a tragic turn when two assailants on a motorcycle targeted a 16-year-old Congolese national in Kanakulya zone, Makindye division, Kampala.
As the victim was speaking on his phone while walking along the road, the two thugs seized the opportunity and snatched his smartphone before attempting to flee on their motorcycle.
However, their escape was short-lived. The victim, aided by members of the community, chased after the suspects. Eventually, the motorcycle ran out of fuel, leading to the apprehension of one of the assailants, Martin Mushengerera, while his accomplice, Reuben Mucunguzi, managed to escape.
Mushengerera was detained at Nabisaalu police post, while efforts were made to locate Mucunguzi. Subsequently, Mucunguzi was arrested and detained at the same police station.
Tragedy struck when Mucunguzi fell ill while in custody and was rushed to Mulago Hospital for medical attention. Regrettably, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Questions arose surrounding the circumstances of Mucunguzi’s death, particularly allegations of mistreatment by police officers. According to locals, Mucunguzi was severely beaten by the Officer in Charge of Nabisaalu police post upon his arrest.
In response to these allegations, Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, stated that an investigation has been initiated to determine the events leading to Mucunguzi’s death. The focus of the inquiry includes allegations of police brutality and the role of officers in Mucunguzi’s demise.
“We are conducting thorough investigations to ensure accountability for whoever is responsible for this tragic incident,” Owoyesigyire assured.
