UPC die-hard and Lira City East Division Mayor, George Okello Ayoo, has confirmed to the media that he is eyeing the position of Lira City East Division MP in the 2026 general election to replace the UPC party president, Jimmy Michael Akena Obote.
Ayoo confirmed that he will contest under the UPC party ticket to be the next Lira City East Division MP in order to join the 12th Parliament. He is very sure of winning the political battle ahead of him.
It is already not a surprise that George Okello Ayoo will make it to Parliament in 2026 to replace Jimmy Michael Akena Obote. He has made some remarkable achievements during his four-year period in office in Lira City East Division as division mayor.
“Now that my president, Jimmy Michael Akena Obote, is moving ahead to contest as president in 2026, I will automatically replace him because I was voted for by the same electorates in the 90 polling stations who also voted for Hon MP Michael Akena Obote in the recent 2021 general election.
It is on record that I was the one who moved the motion that has made the current Lira City carved out from Lira district when I was, by then, still serving as a councilor LCV for Lira district,” adding that he was the one who moved a motion that made Lira City be carved out of Lira district.
Okello Ayoo has held several positions in the local government leadership of Lira District and Lira City East Division respectively.
Okello Ayoo served in the local council for over 20 years. He also served as the vice chairman of Lira District local government in recent years.
He was a councilor for Adekokwok sub-county for five years and later served as the councilor V for Ngetta sub-county for 10 years.
“Today, I would like to request my voters that they should promote me to Parliament so that I replace Hon. Akena Obote in Parliament.”
He narrated that he has already consulted the voters and they are willing to vote for him overwhelmingly in the forthcoming 2026 general election.
George Okello Ayoo was addressing the media from Lira City East Division headquarters on Wednesday afternoon about his ambitions to contest as Lira City East Division MP in the 2026 general election.
It is likely and not a surprise that UPC candidate Okello Ayoo George may win the seat, as witnessed in the Oyam and Dokolo bye-elections where UPC won with a very high margin.
Okello Ayoo is yet to face other candidates from other political parties who may also show their political interest in the same position.
