The Uganda Christian University (UCU) School of Law in Mukono is mourning the sudden death of one of its staff members, Raphael Okiot. Okiot, a tutor assistant, tragically lost his life in an accident at the Nkumba roundabout on Entebbe Road on Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred when Okiot was stopped at the traffic lights at Nkumba in his vehicle, which had the registration number UBQ 371P. A cement mixer truck, with the registration number UAN 836B, lost control and fell onto Okiot’s car, resulting in his untimely death.
Miriam Achieng, the Associate Dean of the School of Law, expressed deep sorrow over Okiot’s passing. She mentioned that Okiot had been a dedicated member of the school for the past five years, always punctual and diligent in his duties. Achieng emphasized the loss of a valuable resource to the School of Law.
Clair Arinaitwe Mwebaze, assistant registrar of the School of Law, shared her shock at Okiot’s sudden demise. Just days before the accident, they had been together conducting pre-entry interviews for the school. She fondly remembered Okiot as a hardworking tutorial assistant, expressing heartfelt condolences and prayers for his soul.
Tonny Tumukunde, the speaker of the UCU Alumni Association and a former classmate of Okiot, reminisced about their friendship. He recalled moments of laughter, parties, and study sessions shared with Okiot. Tumukunde recounted a recent accident they had narrowly escaped, reflecting on the fragility of life. He bid farewell to his friend with a heavy heart, expressing deep sorrow at his passing.
