The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Wednesday that Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania will host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The East Africa Pamoja Bid triumphed over strong competitors, including Egypt, Senegal, and Botswana, securing the hosting rights for Africa’s premier football tournament.

Each venue must meet specific criteria, including proximity to an airport, access to a level-five hospital, and the availability of a five-star hotel.

Uganda has proposed two stadiums for the tournament: the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, which is currently undergoing renovation, and a new stadium to be built in Hoima. The country has also proposed three training facilities: Kampala International School Uganda (Kisu), Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku, and St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.

However, CAF rules prohibit stadiums with artificial turf from hosting international games. The Mutesa II Stadium currently has an artificial turf pitch, so it would need to be replaced with natural grass in order to host AFCON matches.

The Nakivubo Stadium is another option for Uganda’s second stadium. It is a historic stadium that has hosted many international matches in the past, but it is currently in need of renovation.

It is unclear which stadium Uganda will ultimately choose as its second venue for AFCON 2027. The decision is likely to be made based on a number of factors, including cost, timeline, and the availability of other venues.

Regardless of which stadium is chosen, the hosting of AFCON 2027 will be a major event for Uganda and East Africa as a whole. It is an opportunity to showcase the region’s culture and hospitality, and to boost tourism and economic growth.
