The National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s largest opposition party, recently shared an update on the status of their party members who were arrested in Kamuli last week. According to a post on social media platform X, their bail hearing, initially scheduled for today, was postponed to Wednesday, May 29th. This delay occurred as the state attorney requested more time to review the case, leaving today’s application unheard by the court.

Online reactions to this development have been varied, reflecting the frustration and determination of many Ugandans seeking justice for political prisoners. One online member, Katrina, questioned the preparedness of the attorneys involved, wondering why they weren’t ready for court hearings in advance. She expressed her belief that once the current government is removed, legal action should be taken against those involved in such cases, holding them accountable for contributing to injustices.

Another online commentator, Monteiro, suggested a proactive approach to combat wrongful arrests of political prisoners. Monteiro advocated for counter lawsuits against the authorities responsible, emphasizing that every day spent imprisoned should be compensated. This, according to Monteiro, is essential to breaking the cycle of injustice and ensuring accountability.

Meanwhile, Kombozi Ismail conveyed a message of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Ismail emphasized the importance of fearlessness, asserting that if those responsible for protecting citizens are against them, they must rely on themselves for protection.
