Makerere University has lost two of its lecturers who were teaching in the Department of Community Education. The law lecturers were part-time staff members of the department and were among those deployed to teach the Administrative Law Officers Course in various centers of the university.

Mr. Masaba Gabriel was a part-time staff member hailing from Mbale Nabumali. He also served as a police detective under the Uganda Police Force. He was in his mid-30s and was laid to rest in Nabumali Town Council last week.

The department also lost Mr. Martin Mungau, who was a part-time staff member serving in various centers of the university spread across the country. Besides Makerere University, the late Martin Mungau served as a Grade One Magistrate under the judiciary. He was a trained lawyer and administrator with two master’s degrees in law and administration.

Makerere University, through the Department of Community Education, has several centers spread across the country mandated to train Ugandans in various areas. Many of these centers, like the MBS one, are as old as 60 years.

Some of the courses taught include the Administrative Law Officers Course, Public Administration and Management, Project Planning and Management, and Medical Records Management, among others. There are also diploma programs, and it has been a degree training center for many years.

The Mbale branch was established in 1966 and serves the regions of Teso, Bugisu, Sebei, and Bukedi, among others.

Mr. Julius Arinaitwe, a lecturer under the Department of Community Education, says, “As a university community, we are saddened by their passing. We shall miss them and we ask God to strengthen their families.” Below is a picture of the late Masaba Gabriel, a lecturer on administrative law. The writer is a teacher from Mbale.
