The unprecedented surge in coffee prices in Ibanda district represents a significant boon for coffee farmers and industry players, signaling favorable market conditions and promising returns on investment. As coffee continues to play a pivotal role in the district's economy, stakeholders remain optimistic about the sector's growth and resilience in the face of evolving market dynamics.

Robusta coffee prices have reached unprecedented levels, with traders and cooperatives quoting a kilogram of clean beans at an impressive 13,000 shillings. This surge in prices surpasses the previous record of 12,800 shillings per kilo, a milestone first achieved in 2022 and subsequently repeated last year and just last week.

The remarkable increase in Robusta coffee prices reflects a significant shift in market dynamics, with the current price showing a notable uptick from 11,800 shillings, observed just over two weeks ago on May 31. This surge in prices has sparked optimism among coffee farmers and industry stakeholders, signaling favorable conditions for the sector.

Medard Tukamuhabwa, a respected coffee farmer in Ishongororo Town Council, attributes the surge in prices to the exceptional quality of beans available in the market. Tukamuhabwa advises fellow farmers against stockpiling coffee, citing the imminent end of the harvest season. He emphasizes the importance of timely selling to capitalize on the current high prices.

Traditionally, coffee prices tend to decline towards the end of the harvest season due to lower yields and diminished bean quality. However, the current market dynamics in Ibanda district defy this trend, with prices soaring to unprecedented levels despite the harvest season drawing to a close.

Deogratias Tihwayo, representing the Nyakatookye Coffee Growers Cooperative Society, highlights the role of favorable weather conditions in driving up coffee quality. The ongoing dry spell in the district has contributed to enhanced coffee quality, attracting buyers and creating upward pressure on prices.

In addition to the remarkable surge in Robusta coffee prices, Arabica coffee has also witnessed a notable increase, reaching 12,500 shillings per kilogram in Ibanda town. This uptick in Arabica prices further underscores the positive momentum in the local coffee market, benefiting farmers and stakeholders alike.

Coffee cultivation stands as one of the key economic activities promoted by the Ibanda district administration, aimed at improving household incomes and fostering sustainable livelihoods. Alongside coffee farming, other enterprises such as dairy production, piggery, and banana farming are actively promoted to diversify economic opportunities for local communities.
