Steven Ariong, Kapelebyong – Locals in Kapelebyong district in the Teso sub-region have promised to support the NRM government in the 2026 general election after the government constructed a long-awaited multipurpose water dam in the area.

Simon Odeke, a resident, said the presence of the dam has greatly improved the health of their livestock and urged the government to construct another similar dam in Okunguru sub-county to help with the number of animals that might get crowded at the dam.

“This is what we mean by giving services to people; we shall support NRM fully come the 2026 general elections,” he said.

Betty Amuget, another resident, appealed to the ministry to include an irrigation system in the dam so they can grow vegetables.

“We are happy with the dam although there are a few things that the ministry needs to complete, but so far we are happy with the dam,” she said.

Simon Odeke, another resident from Okunguru sub-county, however, asked the government to also consider constructing a dam in their area.

He said the dam would help mitigate floods during the rainy season.

“My humble request to the Ministry of Water and Environment is to please consider constructing a dam for us in Odimai so that we don’t struggle with water like the people of Odukul,” he said.

A visit by this publication to Kapelebyong found hundreds of animals drinking water from the dam amidst excitement from the locals.

John Omoding, a young cattle keeper, said that during the dry season, they suffer a lot with their livestock moving several kilometers looking for water.

“Now we want the government to help us with fish so that we can rear fish in this dam,” he said.
