Kabale District Launches 6.8km Road and Box Culvert Construction with Local Leaders

Authorities from Kabale District, led by Ndorwa East MP Hon. Wilfred Niwagaba, Kabale District Woman MP Hon. Atwakiire Catherine Ndamira, and the Ministry of Works and Transport, launched the construction of a 6.8km Kitibrya–Mishundo–Kabanyonyi Road and a 3.5m box culvert at Kitibrya on Kiruruma Stream on Thursday, June 20, 2024.

The road, worth 2.2 billion shillings, connects two sub-counties, Kyanamira and Buhaara, and passes through four cells in Ndorwa East County.

The road was lobbied for by the MPs and will benefit the communities of Buhaara and Kyanamira sub-counties.

The contract, signed with M/s Kwed Construction Ltd, has a period of one year, and the contractor is expected to complete the rehabilitation of the community access roads and the construction of a box culvert within this timeframe.

Speaking to our reporter, Kyanamira Sub-County LC5 Female Councilor Bridget Asinga, who also serves as the Kabale District Local Government Finance Minister, expressed concern over the temporary bridges that have been washed away by heavy rains, posing a risk to the business community and school-going children in the area.

The Kabale District LC5 Vice Chairperson, Mrs. Akakwansa Miria Tugume, urged the contractor to prioritize local labor and source construction materials from within the community.

The District Chief Administrative Officer, represented by Manzi Gordon, warned the contractor against child labor and emphasized the timely payment of laborers. He also cautioned the workers against engaging in romantic relationships with local women, saying their office has received complaints in the past about workers taking advantage of women in the community, and vowed not to tolerate such behavior.

Engineer Musa Mwiine from the Ministry of Works and Transport encouraged locals to embrace the project for their benefit and noted that there will be no compensation for the 6.8km road.

The Kabale District Woman MP and the Ndorwa East Legislator pledged to rehabilitate roads and renovate health centers within Ndorwa East.

Niwagaba challenged locals to start hotels around the project for their benefit and warned them against failing the project, which they had requested.
