Today, July 4, 2024, the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (Ewura) has reported a decrease in retail gasoline prices across regions receiving fuel shipments from Dar es Salaam, Tanga, and Mtwara compared to June, with diesel seeing a slight increase.

According to a statement released by Ewura, effective from today, Wednesday, July 3, 2024, gasoline prices have decreased in regions supplied from Dar es Salaam ports by Sh51 per liter, now priced at Sh3,210. Conversely, diesel has increased marginally by Sh3, from Sh3,112 to Sh3,115 in the same region.

In Tanga, gasoline prices have dropped from Sh3,263 in June to Sh3,210 in July, while in Mtwara, prices have slightly eased from Sh3,267 to Sh3,212 over the same period.

However, diesel prices at Tanga port have risen from Sh3,121 in June to Sh3,124 in July, and similarly, at Mtwara port, diesel prices have increased from Sh3,122 to Sh3,124 during the same period.

Dr. James Mwainyekule, the Director-General of Ewura, explained in a public statement that the reduction in fuel prices is attributed to declining prices of refined oil in the global market (FOB).

“The changes in fuel prices for July 2024 are influenced by a 5.92% decrease in petrol and a 0.65% decrease in diesel prices of refined oil in the global market (FOB),” he stated.

He further cited other contributing factors such as a 0.6% increase in foreign exchange conversion costs, a 1.6% increase in import premiums for petrol, and a 3.35% increase for diesel at the Dar es Salaam port.

Dr. Mwainyekule noted that there has been an 11.75% decrease in fuel importation costs for both petrol and diesel at the Tanga port and an 11.25% increase for petrol and 11.22% increase for diesel at the Mtwara port.

Additionally, in Kyerwa, Kagera region, petrol will be sold at a higher price of Sh3,448 per liter this month.

 Fuel Price Changes

Port/Region Gasoline Price (July) Diesel Price (July)
Dar es Salaam Sh3,210 Sh3,115
Tanga Sh3,210 Sh3,124
Mtwara Sh3,212 Sh3,124
Kyerwa, Kagera Sh3,448

The fluctuation in fuel prices for July reflects both global market dynamics and local economic factors impacting importation and distribution costs across Tanzania. Consumers and businesses alike are urged to monitor these changes closely for budgeting and planning purposes.
