SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, Police PRO of North Kyoga Region, stated that the Fire Brigade, Rescue Services, and North Kyoga Region Police responded on Friday, July 5th, 2024, around 15:55 hours at VH Primary School, Lira City Central.
This followed a report registered by SP Achien Lillian, R/CLO North Kyoga Region, after receiving a phone call from a member of the school management.
It is alleged that at around 15:40 hours, fire broke out in two rooms used as dormitories for boys in Primary Six. Each room was accommodating thirty (30) pupils. The fire started in one of the two rooms where there was a solar-powered connection.
Upon receiving the information, the North Kyoga Region Fire Brigade and Rescue Services responded promptly and successfully suppressed the fire from spreading to other rooms.
The extent of the damage was severe in one room where all the property was severely damaged, but fortunately, no injuries to pupils were reported.
The cause of the fire is suspected to be a short circuit from the solar power system. Meanwhile, the cost of the damage is being assessed by the school management.
