Lira City West Division MP, Hon. Shedrick Vincent Obong, on Wednesday, July 17th, 2024, vowed to complete his mission to save the lives of residents of Lira City West Division by providing them with access to good roads.
‘It is truly disturbing to learn that money sent to some authorities in Lira City is not being used properly,’ said MP Obong. He stated that anyone involved in diverting the one billion shillings allocated for road funds should immediately return the money before they are arrested by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit or face complaints from the community.
His comments come in response to a planned demonstration by a group of residents demanding accountability for the one billion shillings in road funds allocated to Lira City from the concerned authorities. MP Obong suspects that the money was misused or embezzled by some people in authority within the Lira City Council.
MP Eyit requested the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to take a keen interest and fully investigate the use of the one billion shillings in road funds recently disbursed to Lira City, since it appears the funds were not used for their intended purpose.
The LC One chairman of Ober Kampala cell, Abice Martin Felix, commended MP Obong Eyit for taking initiative and launching work on Ober Road by providing road equipment at his own cost. He said that over five motorcycles belonging to Bodaboda riders were damaged due to the poor road conditions.
Patrick Awongo Dano Alwak expressed his gratitude to Hon. Shedrick Vincent Obong Eyit for his kind act in addressing the issue of poor roads in Ober, Kakoge, and Obutuwelo. Patrick Awongo also threatened to mobilize the community and march to the city to demand accountability for the one billion shillings from the City Authority.
Hon. Ogwal Mike, a councilor of Lira City, told the media that the people of Obutuwelo would join him and other leaders to protest at a particular City authority office to demand an explanation from the City Council regarding the one billion shillings in road funds.
Hon. James Omara Elem, Lira City secretary for finance, stated in a phone interview last Friday, ‘We do not fear investigation because we know we are innocent. Officially, I say let him bring whoever he wants to investigate us. He (MP Obong Eyit) is a member of the road committee, and therefore he is attacking the committee he belongs to.’
When contacted for comment, the chairperson of the road committee for Lira City, Hon. Akena Micheal Jimmy, did not pick up our repeated phone calls for an independent response.
