Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (WSACCO) officially began construction on a new commercial complex in Arua City yesterday. This development aims to bring WSACCO’s services closer to its members and will include space for the Arua branch as well as commercial units for public rental.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Arua City Resident District Commissioner Mr. Charles Ichogor praised President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his leadership in professionalizing the army and establishing WSACCO. He expressed appreciation for the decision to build the complex in Arua City, highlighting the city’s need for training and mentorship for local savings groups. Mr. Ichogor urged city officials to foster partnerships between local SACCOs and WSACCO to adopt best practices and support growth.
Col Joseph Freddy Onata, Chief Executive Officer of WSACCO, noted that the new building will not only enhance the city’s appearance but also provide employment opportunities for local residents involved in construction and material supply. He emphasized the importance of service quality and convenience in SACCO operations.
Col Onata described the Arua City branch as a strategic move to strengthen WSACCO’s community connections and expand its service offerings. By positioning the branch outside military barracks, WSACCO aims to better integrate with the community and facilitate collaboration with other SACCOs in the region, enabling easier knowledge sharing.
Lt Col Allan Kitanda, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, represented Chairman Lt Gen Sam Kavuma at the ceremony. He praised Arua city officials for their prompt processing of documents and approval of architectural plans. Lt Col Kitanda also commended the WSACCO management team for their effective execution of the board’s strategic plans and their progress toward fulfilling the organization’s vision.
Lt Col Kitanda also announced that WSACCO plans to broaden its common bond, allowing select members of the public to engage in business activities with the SACCO.
Lt Col Nathan Bainomugisha, Commander of the 409 Infantry Brigade, representing Brig Gen Felix Busizori of the 4 Infantry Division, lauded WSACCO’s decision to develop a commercial complex in Arua City Centre. He highlighted the high-quality services provided by WSACCO, including the convenience and affordability of its branch network and digital services. Lt Col Bainomugisha pledged support for WSACCO’s operations in Arua and committed to ensuring the security of the business and continued member mobilization.
The groundbreaking event was attended by several dignitaries, including Arua City Mayor Mr. Wadri Anyakun, City Clerk Mr. Kyasanku, RPC West Nile SSP Ochama, Board of Directors members Northern Maj Peter Tuhairwe and West Nile S/Sgt Osuko Peter, and Director of Operations Mr. William Atalyeba.
