The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), in partnership with the Ministry of Works and Transport, has successfully completed a significant upgrade to the Kisoro Aerodrome runway, extending it to 1.2 kilometers. This strategic infrastructure enhancement also includes improvements to the apron, taxiway, and the access road for fire trucks.
These upgrades are poised to transform Uganda’s tourism sector by facilitating direct access to the country’s game parks, significantly benefiting both domestic and international tourists. Previously, visitors had to land at Entebbe Airport and then take connecting flights to reach their destinations, resulting in extended travel times and logistical challenges.
With the newly revamped Kisoro Aerodrome, tourists can now fly directly to the region, streamlining their journey and offering a more seamless and enjoyable travel experience.
In addition to the Kisoro Aerodrome upgrades, the UCAA has identified six strategic aerodromes—Kasese, Arua, Gulu, Pakuba, Kidepo, and Kisoro—for further enhancements to promote trade and tourism, and to improve national, regional, and international connectivity.
Among these projects, Arua Airport is set to undergo a major transformation. It is being upgraded to an international airport, with recent improvements including its elevation to a 4C Category airport. Ongoing work involves the reconstruction of interim taxiways and car parks.
As one of the busiest regional and domestic airports in the country, Arua Airport previously recorded a monthly average of 170 air traffic movements and 12,000 passengers before the COVID-19 pandemic. Strategically located at the tri-state border of Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan, Arua Airport is a crucial hub for cross-border trade.
