Our Reporter, Mbale City – Over ten African kings and cultural leaders have advised President Yoweri Museveni not to relinquish power, observing that he is still capable of leading Uganda for many more years.
These statements were made by the chairman of all African kings, His Royal Majesty King Amenya Fiti V, the paramount king of the Aflao in the traditional area of Volta, Ghana. King Amenya Fiti is also the leader of the peoples of Togo and Benin, and president of all African kings, queens, sultans, sultanates, and sheikhs. He was in Uganda at the invitation of the Bamasaba cultural leader, His Highness Jude Mike Mudoma.
His Royal Majesty Amenya Fiti told millions of Bamasaba people at the Mutoto cultural site during the Imbalu launch recently to take pride in President Museveni’s leadership. He compared Ugandan roads favorably to Ghanaian roads and suggested that Museveni should emulate the kings who don’t give up power easily, a sentiment that was met with applause from the audience.
The spokesperson for the Bamasaba cultural institution said the African kings were very impressed with the reception they received and made their views on President Museveni’s leadership potential known in both private and public discourses.
Mr. Masiga Stevenmasiga noted that the Ugandan kings and cultural leaders present applauded the visiting African kings from Nigeria and Ghana for their comments on President Museveni’s leadership potential.
Mr. Stevenmasiga added that Uganda’s municipal law does not allow our kings latitude to recommend an extended political tenure. Such submissions, if made by Ugandan kings, could be considered an affront to Article 246, which discourages cultural leaders from openly praising political leaders. The law does not grant our cultural leaders the authority to critique the government or the president either; they are expected to maintain neutral positions. Nonetheless, they found comfort in the statements of their guest, King Amenya of Ghana.
“However, I know privately that many of the cultural leaders present found King Amenya’s statements to be very wise and fitting,” Mr. Masiga concluded.
