The Vice President of the Republic of Uganda, Major General Jessica Alupo, has embraced the Kisoro District Council’s resolution endorsing Ruth Nyiraneza, the younger sister of Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, as her ideal successor for the Woman Member of Parliament position for Kisoro District.
During the final sendoff of the late Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs and Woman Member of Parliament for Kisoro District, Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, held at Nyakabingo Church of Uganda Primary School in Chahi Subcounty, Kisoro District, Jessica Alupo, who was the chief mourner, endorsed the resolution as a preferable choice for completing the projects initiated by Sarah Mateke.
Alupo assured the mourners that all unfinished projects of the late minister, including the tarmacking of the Kisoro-Rubuguri-Bwindi Road and the Kisoro-Mgahinga Road, would be completed. She also mentioned that the council’s resolution would be submitted to the Office of the President for formal confirmation.
Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Vice Chairperson for the Western Region, stated that by-elections are a constitutional necessity in Uganda due to its democratic nature.
However, he noted that further deliberations among NRM committee members are needed before Ruth Nyiraneza is formally declared as the NRM candidate for Kisoro District’s Woman Member of Parliament.
The sendoff ceremony was presided over by the Bishop of Muhabura Diocese, Godfrey Mbitse, who urged the mourners to work diligently and tirelessly to build a legacy, just as Minister Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke had.
Minister Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke’s sendoff was attended by over 50 members of Parliament, more than 20 ministers, and thousands of people from Uganda, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other countries worldwide.
The late Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs, and former Kisoro Woman Member of Parliament, Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, was laid to rest at Dr. Phillimon Mateke’s ancestral home in Bugahe Village, Nyakabingo Ward, Chahi Subcounty, Kisoro District.
