It has come to light that claims made by Bobi Wine and leaders of the National Unity Platform (NUP) regarding Olivia Lutaaya being a political prisoner may be misleading. Reports suggest that she was arrested not for political reasons, but for her involvement in the manufacturing and distribution of petrol bombs within the Kampala metropolitan area.
During the 2021 election period, NUP orchestrated a plan to plant petrol bombs in Kampala. The aim was to ensure that the swearing-in of President Museveni did not happen. The meetings to plan the planting of the bombs were held at Chairman Nyanzi’s residence.
The meetings were chaired by Mavice Nakitende, also known as Mama Nsasage. They were also attended by Olivia Nalutaaya, Ssegujja Rashid, Sekitoleko Yasin, also known as Machete, Hadija (then in charge of NUP welfare) — who brought the money to buy the materials for making petrol bombs — Rugumayo Robert (NUP-Kireka), Gadaffi, and others.
The group brought materials such as glass bottles, sand, cotton, threads, and petrol that were used for manufacturing homemade explosives, which were later used to set ablaze motor vehicles, especially those belonging to the government and private companies.
Sekitoleko Yasin, who is also a nephew of Robert Kyagulanyi, always briefed Bobi on what the group was doing. Mavice Nakitende, who chaired the meetings, taught the gang using videos on YouTube, and Chairman Nyanzi coordinated all the activities.
The groups involved in this operation included Bali Bali, Team Sanya, Mission Riders, etc. According to a source in NUP, the groups attacked Prime Petrol Station in Kasangati on 17th March 2021, Loris Petrol Station in Kitetika in Kasangati on 10th May 2021, and the URSB offices on 10th May 2021, burning three vehicles. On the same date, they burned a government vehicle at Nankulabye traffic lights and also threw a homemade bomb at the Katwe police station.
The group went further and burned vehicles, including Premio UBF 995T, Prado UBA 720Q on 21st April 2021, and a Land Cruiser UAY 307C at Clock Tower, as well as vehicle registration numbers UAY 670D and UAJ 320S at Kireka Railway on 6th May 2021.
The security agencies, through their intelligence, identified one of the suspects, Kakooza Muhy-diin, who was arrested at Forest Mall on 10th May 2021, and revealed to security agencies that it was Olivia Lutaaya who was behind the manufacturing and distribution of petrol bombs.
When the security agencies arrested Olivia Lutaaya and interrogated her, she stated that it was Ssegujja Rashid and Sekitoleko Yasin, also known as Machete, who were the brains behind the manufacturing of the petrol bombs.
The security agencies used the information they obtained from the arrested suspects to apprehend others, including Muyondi and the group responsible for the Nabweru petrol bomb. CMI also arrested a NUP councillor who was involved in coordinating these treasonous activities. Some of the suspects have already confessed before the security officers, but Bobi Wine has promised them houses and cars so that they do not plead guilty in court.
