The Archdeacon of Otwal Archdeaconry, West Lango Diocese, under the Church of Uganda, Reverend Captain Esau Omara, is appealing to all clan leaders in Lango and Acholi to respect the religious beliefs of their people.

The Archdeacon’s message follows concerns raised by Christians in the region who accuse clan leaders of forcing them to participate in cultural practices that conflict with their religious beliefs. Recent reports indicate that some clan leaders in Lango have been harassing and torturing members who refuse to contribute to cultural activities.

Reverend Omara emphasizes that Christians in Uganda have the freedom to worship according to their beliefs, regardless of cultural practices. He notes that the Church is registered with the government and adheres to its guidelines.

Thomas Onekalit, a born-again Christian from Omoro District, shared his experience of being severely tortured by his clan leaders after refusing to contribute to cultural practices.
