Drama unfolded in Palam sub-county, Ngariam county, Katakwi District, when mourners confronted Betty Abur, the Vice President’s representative, for making derogatory remarks against Cecilia Anyankoit, a potential District Woman MP candidate for 2026.
Abur sparked outrage during the burial of Sarah Imalingat in Osiomit village by claiming that Anyankoit would step down in favor of the incumbent DWM, Rtd. Maj. Jessica Alupo.
The crowd’s strong reaction forced Abur to apologize and cede the microphone to other speakers.
This incident highlights the tension between Anyankoit and the Vice President’s camp. Anyankoit has been gaining significant popularity in Katakwi district, receiving warm receptions at public events.
Charles Okello emphasized Uganda’s democratic principles, stating that citizens have the right to participate in elections as long as they meet the necessary requirements. He criticized the Vice President’s agents for obstructing potential candidates from speaking at public functions.
Mourners accused Hon. Abur of blocking other speakers while contributing nothing to the bereaved family. They expressed frustration with the Vice President’s absence during times of need and praised Anyankoit for her support.
In another incident, Kazi ni Kazi and the Vice President’s campaign agent, Ben Egau, were chased away from a funeral in Africa village, Getom sub-county, for making reckless remarks against Anyankoit.
Egau, who had contributed nothing to the bereaved family, was criticized for discrediting Anyankoit, who had donated Shs100,000.
After facing sharp criticism, Egau failed to speak and abruptly ended his speech, handing over the microphone to the MC and leaving the event.
Mourners expressed their disapproval of Egau’s behavior and urged the Vice President to avoid associating with such individuals.
Addressing mourners in Osiomit and Olupe, Anyankoit urged the public to reject the political merchants surrounding the Vice President who are hindering her from delivering services to the people. She emphasized the importance of exercising democratic rights and voting for the candidate of their choice.
This incident showcases the growing support for Anyankoit and the increasing dissatisfaction with the Vice President’s leadership style. The battle for Katakwi’s hearts and minds has just begun, and many believe that Anyankoit is a potential liberator for the district.
