OBONGI, Uganda — Authorities in Obongi district have converted the Obongi Health Center 4 mortuary into a store. The mortuary was constructed at a cost of over 260 million shillings under the Development Response to Displacement Impact Project (DRDIP) in 2018 by Savanah United Enterprises Ltd of Koboko district.
Due to the non-functionality of the mortuary, no post-mortems are conducted in Obongi district. Relatives of the deceased who require a post-mortem must pay up to one million shillings for transportation to Moyo Hospital.
Patients at Obongi Health Center expressed disappointment about the lack of a mortuary, as dead bodies are left in the wards.
During the Ankole Times reporter’s visit, the health center was unable to perform a post-mortem due to a family’s inability to afford the one million shilling fee required for transportation to Moyo Hospital.
Obongi District CAO Humphrey Otim stated that the mortuary is incomplete and that it is the responsibility of the RDC, LCV, and CAO to lobby for the necessary equipment.
Obongi district has a total of 17 health centers, including 7 Health Center IIIs, 6 Health Center IIs, and 1 Health Center IV.
