A new political party called the People Power Front (PPF) has been officially registered by Spartan Mukagyi on December 20, 2023.
This party is gaining a lot of attention due to its strong and provocative name, which seems to be inspired by the concept of “People Power.” However, this has not been well received by some members of the National Unity Platform (NUP), a major opposition party in Uganda, based in Kavule.
There are rumors that David Lewis Rubongoya, the Secretary General of NUP, along with Spartan Mukagyi, are working behind the scenes to build this new party. Spartan Mukagyi is known for his strong political skills, especially among local and international supporters. Many believe his involvement will give the PPF a big boost.
The PPF is seen as a possible splinter group of NUP, and many leaders within NUP are reportedly aligning themselves with this new formation. The Chairman of PPF, Hon. Hajji Misango Musa, has been gaining popularity, particularly after a controversy about his support for mobilization in Eastern Uganda.
Concerns are rising that PPF’s growth could weaken NUP as the 2026 elections approach. NUP has been criticized for focusing more on luxurious events, like extravagant weddings and cruises, instead of supporting the families of its imprisoned members and addressing key issues for Ugandans.
The PPF is organizing a large gathering called the “People Power Reunion” on November 23, 2024, at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
The event is expected to attract over one million people, including both former and current coordinators of NUP from Uganda and the diaspora. The goal of this event is to review strategies, build new alliances, and find ways to unite disillusioned opposition members. Many believe that PPF will reveal more leaders at this significant gathering.
