Some of the defilement suspects arrested on RDC orders in Obongi

Obongi Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka has launched a campaign to combat the rampant issue of defilement in the district.

RDC Hashaka expressed deep concern over the alarming rate of school dropouts, child pregnancies, and early marriages, directly linked to the prevalence of defilement. He highlighted the disturbing trend of teachers and local leaders being involved in these heinous crimes.

Two recent arrests of teachers in Palorinya sub-county exemplify the severity of the problem. Avayo Yoid, a P7 teacher, was apprehended for having sexual intercourse with a P7 student in her own father’s bed. Mawadri Denis, also known as Alaro Denis, another teacher, was arrested for defiling a P6 pupil who is now five months pregnant. The victim is a Sudanese refugee.

RDC Hashaka identified several challenges hindering the fight against defilement:

  • Lack of political will
  • Connivance by relatives of victims
  • Failure of the investigative desk to follow up cases and arrest suspects

He cited a specific case involving four P5 and P7 girls defiled in a Gimara sub-county school. Despite the severity of the crime, no thorough investigation has been conducted, and the suspects remain at large. Some of these suspects have even married the underage girls they impregnated.

The RDC has urged government intervention to address the issue of defilement and bring perpetrators to justice. Efforts to reach the Obongi District Police Commander for comment were unsuccessful.
