(Dar es Salaam) – The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has set an ambitious target to collect TZS 15.27 trillion ($6.1 billion) from January to June 2025. This includes a record-breaking goal of TZS 3.46 trillion ($1.4 billion) in December 2024, the highest ever for the authority since its inception.

TRA’s Director of Finance, Dinah Edward, announced the targets during a meeting in Dar es Salaam to express gratitude to the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) for its cooperation throughout 2024. The collaboration, she noted, has significantly bolstered TRA’s capacity to exceed its legal mandate for tax collection.

For the 2024/2025 fiscal year, TRA’s overall target is TZS 31.05 trillion ($12.4 billion). By November 2024, the agency had already collected TZS 12.64 trillion ($5 billion), accounting for 41.67% of the goal.

Edward emphasized the importance of partnerships with taxpayers and stakeholders in achieving this milestone.

She highlighted BoT’s crucial role in policy support, banking regulation, and financial transactions, which she said contributed to expanding the tax base, simplifying tax payments, and enhancing revenue management.

Governor of the Bank of Tanzania, Emmanuel Tutuba, reassured the public that BoT would continue ensuring secure and efficient payment systems to facilitate TRA’s tax collection efforts. Tutuba emphasized that the bank’s financial infrastructure is robust and secure, protecting government accounts and ensuring smooth economic transactions.

He affirmed that BoT’s cybersecurity measures are operational 24/7, guaranteeing system safety and stability. “Our systems are among the most secure, and we work tirelessly to prevent any intrusion attempts,” said Tutuba.

The governor also commended TRA for adopting a friendlier tax collection approach. This shift has encouraged voluntary compliance among taxpayers, he added.

“People now see TRA as approachable. This perception motivates taxpayers to fulfill their obligations and seek dialogue when they face challenges,” Tutuba said.
