Ronald Turyamureeba, an inmate serving a sentence for rape at Fort Portal Main Prison, was shot and killed while attempting to escape during the recent festive season.
Uganda Prisons spokesperson, Frank Baine, confirmed the incident on Monday, stating that sentries responded swiftly to Turyamureeba’s escape attempt.
“Turyamureeba jumped the prison’s perimeter fence. Sentries, noting his action, used force to apprehend him. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries,” Baine explained.
Baine reported three additional escape attempts across the country during the festive season. “Escape attempts occurred in Dokolo, Iganga, and Murchison Bay at Luzira. In all of these instances, the inmates were recaptured without incident,” he said.
Despite the escape attempts, Baine described the festive season as largely peaceful, with a modest increase of 50 inmates across the prison system.
He stated that the current inmate population stands at 78,824, comprising 40,805 convicts, 37,474 on remand, and 545 debtors. The prison service currently employs 14,000 staff.
