A tragic accident in Kisoro District, Uganda, on February 8, 2025, claimed the life of a 12-year-old and injured 12 others.
According to Elly Maate, Police Spokesperson for the Kigezi Region, the incident occurred at approximately 4:20 PM in Mupaka Village, South Ward, Chahafi Town Council.
A Mitsubishi Fuso truck, registration number UBN 328X, carrying 60 bags of beans, 13 juveniles, and other loaders from Gahenerezo and Mupaka villages, was heading towards Lake Chahafi.
The truck failed to ascend a steep hill, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle rolled backward and overturned.
Irakoze Bright, 12, was among the juvenile passengers and died in the accident. The other injured children, aged 8 to 13, were transported to Chahafi Health Center IV and Mutorele Hospital for treatment.
The injured include: Bayizere Mark, 9; Niyomuchamanza Gerald, 12; Murengezi Daudi, 9; Iratuzi Nafutari, 13; Hakizimana Medard, 9; Niyongabo Joab, 13; and Niyongabo Patrick, 8. Five other victims’ names were not immediately available.
Maate stated that preliminary investigations indicate the truck’s poor mechanical condition was a contributing factor. A post-mortem examination was conducted on the deceased at Chahafi Health Center IV. Police investigations are ongoing.
