Joseph Ayollo, Amudat – Pokot Senior Secondary School in Amudat District, Karamoja sub-region, is facing a severe staff accommodation crisis, forcing teachers to share rooms.

This was revealed by the school headmistress, Ms. Josephine Tino, during a meeting with parents at the school.

Ms. Tino thanked the Ugandan government and Irish Aid for their support in constructing classrooms and a girls’ dormitory. However, she emphasized that the biggest remaining challenge is teacher accommodation.

She explained that the school has 35 staff members, including non-teaching staff, but only five teacher houses. “We appeal to the government, especially the office of Mama Janet, our education minister, to extend a helping hand to Pokot SS.

She is the one who has made Pokot SS shine during her time as Minister for Karamoja Affairs,” she said.

According to Ms. Tino, despite the harsh environment in Karamoja, the staff are dedicated to providing quality education at Pokot SS.

She noted that the community in Pokot, Amudat District, is gradually embracing education, unlike in previous years when they viewed it as a hindrance to girls’ marriage and bringing animals home.
