The global online community was stunned after a significant number of Muslims were detained for eating and drinking during the fasting month of Ramadan. This action was carried out by the Islamic Police in Kano, a northern state in Nigeria.

Ramadan, the month of fasting for Muslims, commenced just a few days ago. However, those who were arrested did not begin their fast as required, and food vendors were also apprehended.

Mujahid Aminudeen, the deputy commander of Hisbah, informed the press that around 20 individuals were taken into custody for failing to fast, along with five food vendors. He also mentioned that further operations would be conducted to apprehend individuals who do not observe the fasting period.

The Islamic police in Kano, Nigeria, have detained Muslims who were seen eating and drinking in public, as well as those selling food at the beginning of Ramadan, a time when Muslims are expected to fast from dawn until dusk.

Deputy commander Mujahid Aminudeen stated to the BBC that 20 had been arrested for not observing the fast and five for selling food, emphasizing that operations would persist throughout the month, which started on Saturday.

“It is crucial to highlight that our focus does not extend to non-Muslims,” he remarked.

Mr. Aminudeen indicated that any form of “disrespect” towards Ramadan would not be tolerated.

“It is disheartening that in such a sacred month dedicated to fasting, adult Muslims can be seen consuming food and drinks publicly. We will not accept that, and that is why we undertook these arrests,” he continued. He also revealed that all 25 individuals have been taken to a Sharia Court and will face appropriate penalties. He mentioned that they often receive tips from concerned citizens regarding those not adhering to Ramadan.

“We receive calls from individuals who are upset upon witnessing public eating, and we respond promptly by going to the scene to execute arrests.”

Additionally, those spotted with inappropriate haircuts were also detained, as were individuals wearing shorts above the knee and tricycle drivers transporting both male and female passengers.

It is important to remember that similar operations gained attention during last year’s Ramadan. Those detained were released after agreeing to fast, with their guardians summoned to ensure compliance.

Unfortunately for those arrested this year, they will encounter the repercussions of Sharia law. Implemented two decades ago in northern Nigeria, Sharia law operates alongside secular law in states with a predominantly Muslim population.
