On Saturday, March 29, 2025, there was jubilation in Lira City East Division as Hon. Minister Betty Amongi Akena, the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, distributed over 4,000 hand hoes to the residents of Iwal, Acwao, and Ongica wards. The donation was part of her promise to support farmers in the area, especially those engaged in subsistence farming, to boost household food production as the rainy season has just begun.

During her speech, Minister Betty Amongi informed the electorate of Lira City that she is a confirmed aspirant and the UPC candidate who has been endorsed to contest for the position of Lira City Woman MP in the upcoming 2026 elections. She mentioned that, in addition to donating over 20,000 hand hoes in Lira City, she is also offering a free pickup truck to transport deceased individuals for families who may not have the means to cover the cost of transporting their loved ones.

In a related development, she encouraged members of the public in Lira City to take advantage of the free sitting tents donated by her for any functions such as weddings, meetings, or funeral services within the Lira City area.

Furthermore, Amongi confirmed that a new tractor is in the pipeline and will soon be brought to Lira City, allowing residents to access it at an affordable maintenance fee for ploughing their land. She also announced the establishment of a free legal service through her law firm, which will assist clients in need of legal redress, such as those facing political threats or involved in land disputes.

Dina Bua, the political coordinator for Minister Betty Amongi, rallied the people of Iwal, Arumgai, Ongica, and Acwao wards, urging them to know that a significant percentage of NRM supporters are fully behind Hon. Betty Amongi in the 2026 general elections, giving her a strong advantage in the race for Lira City Woman MP.

Sam O, a prominent NRM figure in Lira City, assured voters that Amongi was appointed by H.E. President Yoweri Museveni Kaguta, who is also the head of the NRM party. This, Sam O emphasized, is the reason many NRM members in Lira City will continue to support her until the very end.

Hon. Odongo Odul, who is contesting for the position of Lira City East Division Mayor, encouraged the people of Acwao Ward in Lira City East Division to be ready to vote for him, along with Hon. Minister Betty Amongi Akena and other top UPC aspirants, in the 2026 general elections to ensure better service delivery in Lira City.
