Kitgum Municipality MP, Hon. Denis Amere Onekalit, has received widespread praise from residents of Kitgum Municipality for his effective and impactful leadership in Parliament.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Hon. Onekalit highlighted several achievements during his tenure.

In just four years in the 11th Parliament of Uganda, Hon. Denis Amere Onekalit has made significant strides, outshining previous MPs who represented Kitgum Municipality. During an interview with our reporter on Thursday, May 15, 2025, Onekalit reflected on his journey since being elected in 2021. He described himself as a vibrant and active leader, committed to delivering results for his constituents throughout his 2021–2026 term.

One of the notable instances of his leadership was his active and high-level debate contributions during the recent plenary at the Gulu Regional Parliamentary sitting.

“I have achieved more than any leader before me in Kitgum Municipality,” said Hon. Onekalit.

Among his major contributions is the donation of an ambulance, which is currently being used to transport the sick, deceased, and other health-related referrals.

Hon. Onekalit also gained significant recognition after distributing 8,470 Mama Kits last year, along with an additional 100 Mama Kits this month to expectant mothers. These efforts have earned him praise as a grassroots leader who works for his people across Kitgum District and beyond.

In the education sector, he has sponsored many students, including the top PLE, UCE, and UACE performers in UNEB examinations, helping raise the standard of education in the municipality.

His “Amere Cup” sports tournament has been well received by the youth and sports lovers in Kitgum Municipality as a tool for unity and talent promotion.

Akun Vicky, a 42-year-old voter from Pandwong Division, thanked Hon. Amere for his outstanding representation in both committee work and plenary debates, calling him “a real performer.”

Jacky Aringo, a 46-year-old resident of Hilltop Cell, Pandwong Division, also praised the MP for establishing the “Amere Foundation Skilling Center,” calling it a clear example of a leader who gives back to the wanainchi (ordinary citizens).

Another beneficiary, who requested anonymity, shared her gratitude after receiving a goat through Hon. Amere’s livestock distribution project in Ayul ‘A’, Ayul Ward, Pager Division. She expects the goat to reproduce in the coming months, providing her with future income and sustainability.

In addition, Hon. Onekalit has been personally funding several youth groups in Kitgum Municipality and has empowered women through his “Women Group Financing” scheme, contributing to poverty reduction in the region.

Other key achievements include:

  • Repairing boreholes and constructing new water points, ensuring access to clean water.

  • Distributing seeds to farmers, thereby boosting agricultural productivity.

  • Supporting churches and mosques, reflecting his commitment to faith and community values.

In an exclusive interview on Thursday evening, Hon. Amere expressed his intent to contest for a seat in the 12th Parliament, confident of “winning with flying colours” in the 2026 general election. He pledged to continue lobbying for resources and development for his constituents.
