Kampala, June 3, 2025 – A Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) counter-terrorism unit successfully neutralized two armed terrorists in Munyonyo, an upscale Kampala suburb, early this morning.
The intelligence-led operation, confirmed by Colonel Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, targeted suspects linked to a suspected bomb explosion near the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine, where one person was feared dead, according to unverified reports on X.
The operation underscores heightened security measures during the ongoing Martyrs Day celebrations, a significant national event honoring the Uganda Martyrs executed in 1886. The UPDF and police have intensified patrols around key pilgrimage sites, including Munyonyo and Namugongo, to ensure the safety of thousands of pilgrims.
Colonel Magezi urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, reporting any suspicious activities or individuals to security services.
As investigations into the explosion continue, authorities are committed to maintaining peace during the commemorations.
Further details are expected as the situation develops.
