Uganda’s Electoral Commission has officially revised the roadmap for the much-anticipated 2025/2026 general elections—pushing forward key nomination dates and adjusting campaign timelines. The changes, announced by EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama during a press briefing on July 18, are intended to smoothen electoral logistics and enhance transparency in the lead-up to the national polls.
Key Changes to Watch
Presidential hopefuls will now be nominated on September 23 and 24, 2025, a full week earlier than the previously set dates in October. Parliamentary nominations are also set earlier—happening on September 16 and 17, while local government aspirants (district and city leaders) will be nominated between September 3 and 12.
Special Interest Groups (SIGs), including youth, elderly, and persons with disabilities vying for representation in local councils, will have their nomination window between December 8 and 12.
Campaigns and Voting
The official presidential campaign period is scheduled to run from October 4, 2025, through January 12, 2026, leading directly into polling dates that will stretch from January 12 to February 9, 2026 for all elective positions.
Who Qualifies?
Justice Byabakama reminded all intending candidates that a minimum of an A-Level certificate or its equivalent is mandatory. Those with foreign academic qualifications must present an equivalency certificate from the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), and it must be submitted at least two months before nomination.
Why the Rush?
The EC says the early nominations allow more breathing space for crucial preparations—such as ballot design, candidate verification, and logistics. “We need to ensure enough time for planning, especially with increased political participation across the board,” said Byabakama.
