The Acting Director of Women Affairs in the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Colonel Lydia Nandudu, has urged female combatants deployed under the United Nations Guard Unit Eleven (UNGU-XI) in Somalia to uphold discipline, professionalism, and diligence as representatives of both Uganda and the UPDF.

Col Nandudu delivered her message during a routine visit aimed at evaluating the performance of female personnel and reviewing gender-related matters in accordance with United Nations standards and UPDF gender policies.

Addressing the troops, she emphasised the importance of preserving Uganda’s image with honour and integrity in the multinational peacekeeping mission. “To maintain a positive image of the UPDF and Uganda in such a mission, we must follow our professional standards with discipline and courage,” she said.

She further encouraged the women to rise above societal stereotypes and become examples for future generations of female soldiers.

Acknowledging the UPDF’s ongoing efforts to create more opportunities for women, Col Nandudu urged those deployed to prioritise their personal and professional advancement. “I implore you to be disciplined and take advantage of every opportunity for development whether through professional courses or participating actively in drills and military activities,” she said. “Also, plan wisely for life after service by investing your earnings well.”

The delegation was welcomed by Lt Col Barigye, who expressed appreciation for the visit, nothing its potential to raise morale. He reaffirmed the UPDF’s commitment to advancing gender equality within its ranks.

The engagement was attended by both senior and junior officers serving in the mission area.
