A group of women in Amudat and Nakapiripirit districts in Karamoja region have been equipped with skills on how to stand and fight against gender inequalities and be able to advocate for their rights and driver social justice within their communities.
The trainings that took place this week in different venues were supported by Action Aida Uganda with the funding from European Union.
The participants hailed the training saying if they were earlier on trained they would have been in leadership roles.
Pauline Cheptur one of the participants in Amudat district said the traditional cultures in Karamoja that bans women from participating in any meetings and make decisions had killed the voices of women in decision making.
“We grew up knowing a man should not be challenged whether he dose bad or good but his decision is final and this has made Karamoja not to develop because a developed minds of a man there should be a woman behind which was not the case in Karamoja,”She said.

She hailed Action Aid program and urged that such programs should continue untill women get
Marry Nakiru a participant from Nakapiripirit said with what they have learnt from the training, they will go and apply it to the community meetings.
“We are happy with the European Union support to Action Aid please continue helping us so that we can have mindset that can help to develop Karamoja,”She said.
Mr Micha Lolem the member of parliament for UPE county in Amudat district hailed the European Union for supporting such a critical program saying women were the ambassadors of development in the entire world.
He appealed that this program should be rolled out to the entire region so that all women in Karamoja region benefit from it.
Mr. mmanuel Koriang the program officer of this project said the specific objective of the project is to enhance access and uptake of comprehensive sexual and gender based violence.

“We are working towards enhance citizens agency to demand accountability for sexual and reproductive health and rights service delivery and challenge negative social cultural norms,”he said.
He said the project targets 2,000 adolescents aged 10 to 19 years, especially girls living with disability, 400 teenage mothers,150 cultural and religious leaders,100 district local government leaders of Nakapiripirit and Amudat.
Mr. Koriang added that the project also brings in 50 representatives from ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development and the ministry of health.End
