Questions Mount Over Death of American in Entebbe Police Cell

An American citizen of Burundian origin, Eric Nkusi, died in police custody at Entebbe Division Police Station under unclear circumstances, just hours after being arrested on the night of August 1, 2025.

Nkusi had reportedly been detained for overstaying his visa. Sources close to the station indicate that during the night, he developed severe health complications and repeatedly pleaded for heroin, warning that he would die without it.

Witnesses claim Nkusi was a suspected drug user, and his deteriorating condition was evident. Despite his appeals, no urgent medical attention appears to have been provided, and he was found dead in the cell before dawn.

The atmosphere at the Entebbe Police Station has reportedly become tense, with officers shifting blame over possible negligence in handling the detainee’s health emergency.

Nkusi’s body has since been transferred to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a postmortem examination. Efforts are underway to repatriate the body for burial.

As of now, police have not released an official statement regarding the cause of death or the handling of Nkusi’s detention.
