The family of Naome Nyabeyishiki, a law student at Kampala International University (KIU), is struggling to come to terms with her sudden and tragic death.
According to police reports, Naome lost her life following complications from a failed abortion attempt while at her boyfriend’s home in Nsambya, Kampala. Friends at the university told authorities that Naome had mentioned she was going to spend the night at her boyfriend’s house.
Concern grew when her phone was switched off hours later, prompting friends to alert both her parents and Kabalagala Police Station.
Investigations reveal that Naome later went alone to Safety Medical Clinic in Katwe, complaining of heavy bleeding.
The attending doctor referred her to Mulago National Referral Hospital and arranged for her transport in a special hire taxi. Unfortunately, she passed away before reaching the hospital.
Her body, along with that of her unborn baby—estimated to be five months along—was taken to the Mulago mortuary. The grim discovery was made several days later after family and friends had been searching for her.
Naome was laid to rest in Rakai District. However, as of press time, the remains of her baby were still at the mortuary, while police continue the search for her boyfriend, who has reportedly gone into hiding for fear of arrest.
The incident has once again brought attention to the dangers of unsafe abortion and the urgent need for awareness and support systems for young women facing unplanned pregnancies.
Authorities have urged members of the public to cooperate in the ongoing investigation to ensure justice for the late Naome.
