Uganda Christian University (UCU) commenced its Advent (September) semester by hosting an induction ceremony for its newly admitted students on September 26, 2023. This event marked the official integration of these students into the UCU community. Commonly referred to as “freshers,” these newcomers embark on their academic journey at UCU with a sense of anticipation and hope.
To gain insights into the expectations of these freshers, Kefa Senoga had conversations with a few of them, who shared their thoughts:
Kazawura Mark Arthur
Mark Arthur, a first-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UCU, was influenced by the success of his relatives who attended the university. He believes that UCU will equip him with the necessary training to achieve his career goals. He anticipates a challenging academic environment but expresses confidence in overcoming it with access to qualified lecturers and the well-equipped Hamu Mukasa Library. Mark Arthur, a sports enthusiast, is also excited about utilizing UCU’s sports facilities for activities like soccer and basketball.
Khauka Ronald
Khauka Ronald, enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology program, is motivated by a desire to enhance his technological skills and formalize his knowledge in the field. He foresees no significant academic challenges due to his passion for the subject. His concerns revolve around non-academic aspects, particularly food and sustenance, as a non-resident student.
Nabukalu Vanitah
Vanitah was captivated by the beauty of UCU’s main campus in Mukono during her first visit. Pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Communication, she aspires to become one of the country’s top journalists. She also looks forward to forming friendships with individuals who share strong Christian values since UCU is deeply rooted in such values.
Nasasiira Lillian
Nasasiira chose UCU to pursue her law studies, driven by the belief that UCU excels in grooming the best law students in Uganda. Her Christian faith led her to select this prestigious Christian institution to ensure her values remain steadfast during her university journey.
Welikhe Sam
Sam, eager to advance in his studies, opted for the Higher Education Certificate program at UCU after falling short of the required points for his preferred course in Civil and Environmental Engineering. This program spans nine months and aims to help him qualify for his desired engineering course. Sam also intends to embrace opportunities for spiritual growth by participating in chapel services, prayer groups, and Christian ministries, which he finds appealing at UCU.
