President Yoweri Museveni has expressed concern over the continued detention of opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye, emphasizing their long-standing friendship that dates back to their days fighting together in the National Resistance Army (NRA) bush war.

Besigye, a former personal physician to Museveni and senior NRA officer, was arrested earlier this year in Kenya and returned to Uganda to face charges related to national security. Government officials insist the arrest was lawful, while supporters claim it was politically motivated.

During a visit to Rukungiri District, Besigye’s home region, Museveni’s message was delivered by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa and Ministers Jim Muhwezi and Chris Baryomunsi. Speaking on behalf of the president, Tayebwa said, “Dr Besigye is my friend. We fought together in the bush. I am concerned about his health and well-being, but the law must take its course.”

Museveni stressed that no one is above the law, noting that Besigye will be tried like any other citizen. Tayebwa also accused Besigye’s lawyers of repeatedly delaying the trial through numerous legal applications.

Besigye has been a prominent political rival, challenging Museveni in several presidential elections since 2001. Their relationship has transformed from close comrades-in-arms to political opponents, shaping Uganda’s opposition landscape for over two decades.

The president appealed for calm, urging the public to allow the judiciary to handle the matter without interference.
